General Questions
What is a doula?
A doula is a trained professional who provides continuous emotional, physical, and informational support to birthing people and their families. Unlike medical providers, doulas don't perform clinical tasks but focus on comfort, advocacy, and helping you feel empowered through birth and postpartum. Research shows that doula support leads to more positive birth experiences, shorter labors, reduced need for pain medication, and improved postpartum outcomes.
How is a doula different from a midwife or OB-GYN?
Midwives and OB-GYNs are medical providers who attend to your medical care during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. Doulas provide emotional and physical support alongside your medical care—we're not medical providers. I work collaboratively with your healthcare team to ensure you receive comprehensive support throughout your pregnancy and birth experience.
Is doula support covered by insurance?
Insurance coverage for doula services varies. Some insurance plans and employers offer coverage or reimbursement. I recommend checking with your specific insurance provider about their doula coverage. During our consultation, we can discuss payment options and flexible arrangements that work for your situation.
Do you work with all types of births?
Yes! I support people planning hospital births, birth center births, and home births. I also support families navigating unplanned cesarean births, inductions, and other variations from their birth plan. My role is to support your choices and help you feel informed, heard, and empowered—regardless of how your birth unfolds.
Birth Doula Support
When do you start supporting me as a birth doula?
We begin with at least two prenatal consultations before your due date. During these meetings, we'll discuss your birth preferences, hopes, and concerns. I'll also share comfort techniques and answer your questions. Once you go into labor, I'll be present from early labor through birth and beyond, providing continuous support when you need me most.
Can my partner or support person be involved?
Absolutely! Your partner or chosen support person is central to the birth experience. I'm here to support them too—helping them understand your needs, facilitating their role as your support person, and making sure everyone feels confident and informed. We work as a team to help you have the best experience possible.
What comfort measures do you provide?
I provide comfort measures including: position changes, movement guidance, breathing techniques, massage and counterpressure, emotional support and encouragement, advocacy with your medical team, and informational support. We discuss your preferences during prenatal visits, and I adjust my support based on what feels right for you in the moment.
Do you attend all births, or are there limitations?
I attend births within my service area—if you're within an hour of Omaha, Nebraska (including Lincoln), or traveling with me, I can attend your birth. I manage my client load to ensure I'm available when you go into labor. During our initial consultation, we'll confirm my availability and discuss any scheduling specifics.
Postpartum Support
What exactly does postpartum doula support include?
Postpartum doula support focuses on helping you recover and adjust to life with your newborn. I can help with meal preparation, light household tasks, newborn care guidance, feeding support, emotional listening, and information about postpartum recovery. We tailor the support to your specific needs—whether that's daily visits those first few weeks or weekly support for several months.
How long after birth can I access postpartum doula support?
Postpartum support is most beneficial in the early weeks and months after birth. I can typically start visiting within a few days after you bring your baby home. The support can continue for as long as you need—some families benefit from a few weeks of daily support, while others prefer weekly visits for several months. We'll create a schedule that works for you.
Do you provide lactation support?
I provide general information and support around feeding, but I'm not a lactation consultant. If specialized lactation support is needed, I can help connect you with a certified lactation consultant (IBCLC). My focus is on practical help, emotional support, and ensuring you know how to access professional resources when needed.
Can I hire you for both birth doula and postpartum support?
Yes! Many families find great continuity in working with the same doula for both birth and postpartum support. Since I'll know your family, your birth story, and your needs from our prenatal work together, I can provide seamless support through both transitions. This can feel especially valuable as you navigate recovery and early parenthood.
Prenatal Coaching & Birth Planning
What's the difference between prenatal coaching and a birth class?
Birth classes typically provide general education about pregnancy, labor, and birth. Prenatal coaching is personalized to you and your partner—we work one-on-one to explore your specific concerns, process emotions, develop coping strategies, and create a birth plan that reflects your values. It's more intimate and tailored than a group class.
How many prenatal coaching sessions do I need?
This varies based on your needs. Many people benefit from 3-4 sessions during pregnancy to explore their feelings, develop coping strategies, and create their birth plan. Some families need more support if they're navigating complex emotions or previous trauma. We can discuss what feels right for you during our initial consultation.
Can we do virtual prenatal coaching sessions?
Yes! I offer both in-person and virtual prenatal coaching and birth planning sessions. We can meet via video call if that's more convenient for you. Virtual sessions work great for discussing birth preferences, processing emotions, and developing your birth plan.
What if I'm not sure what I want for my birth?
That's completely normal! Prenatal coaching is designed for exactly this situation. We'll explore different birth options, discuss what matters to you, and help you develop a vision for your birth. There's no judgment—my role is to help you feel informed and confident in whatever choices feel right for you.
Availability & Logistics
What's your service area?
I serve families within one hour of Omaha, Nebraska—including Gretna, Elkhorn, Bellevue, Papillion, and Lincoln. I attend births at all Omaha, Council Bluffs, and Lincoln area hospitals. For home births, I can travel up to two hours. I'm also available as a travel doula for families outside my primary area for an additional fee.
How far in advance do I need to book you?
I recommend reaching out as soon as you know you're pregnant or early in pregnancy so we can discuss availability and schedule your prenatal consultations. Since I manage my caseload to ensure availability, booking earlier gives us more flexibility. That said, I do my best to accommodate requests, so reach out whenever you're ready.
What if you're not available when I go into labor?
I manage my caseload carefully to ensure I'm available for my clients. When we work together, I'm committed to being present at your birth. If an unexpected situation prevents me from attending (rare medical emergencies), I would work with you in advance to provide a backup doula who you've also met and are comfortable with.
